• Exclusive fishing right far from any neighbour

Sagmestereidet is one of our best places for sea trout and wild salmon fishing, and our guests have fishing rights over large areas and exclusive fishing rights in the whole river and outlet into the fjord. It is a typical small salmon watercourse where the river is most suitable for one-hand fly fishing or with a spinner.

The Eide river flows out from Eidevatnet, which is considered to be one of the region’s best waters for sea trout and small salmon fishing. The area also offers good waters for inland fishing.

  • Comfortable cabin with 6 beds

The cabin is comfortable and functional. The main cabin is 35 m2 with one bedroom, and a sleeping annex with two bedrooms. There is a basic but comfortable outside toilet. A wood-heated sauna is next to the lake.

There is a propane stove with oven, propane driven fridge/freezer and facilities for smoking fish. A basic water system provides water to the cabin and there is a comfortable shower next to the lake. Beds are prepared on arrival.

  • Our most popular fishing destination

Sagmestereidet lies furthest out along the Eide watercourse towards the Harangsfjord. The cabin lies on the edge of one of Norway’s largest protected coniferous forest reserves. This is a truly special area both when it comes to nature and fish. The nearest neighbour is the cabin Øvereidet, 4 km away. We arrange transport to the cabin by boat. This location is suitable for 4–6 persons.

Fishing

The watercourse has a drainage area of approximately 100 km2 and is not affected by watercourse development. It currently has one of the country’s strongest strains of sea trout in addition to some salmon. Good catches are taken in both the river and the water of both sea trout, salmon, inland trout and roe.

Sea trout and salmon

The fishing at Sagmestereidet is normally good. The Eide river is about 300 meters long, and has an average water flow of 6 m3/sec. There are several good places for both fly fishing and fishing with spinning bait, spoon bait and angler worm.

On the back side of the cabin lies Eidevatn. The fishing is here very good, and many different techniques are used. In this lake, also our guests from Øvereidet and the local population (not so many) are allowed to fish.

The Eide lake is about 4 km long, and ends at the Øvereid river. In this river, our guests have fishing rights on southern side of the river, whereas our guests at Øvereidet have exclusive rights on the northern side.

An additional nice kind of fishing is trolling after sea trout and salmon in the fjord.

Trout fishing

There several good trout lakes that can be reached with ease from Sagmestereidet.

Nedre Urstjønn (50 meters amsl) is a trout lake that ends up in Eidevatn. The lake is known for having bite-willing trout with size up to 0,5 kg. It is possible to use most fishing techniques. There is a small boat in the lake (for maximum two people).

Øvre Urstjønn (Djuptjønnet, 300 meters amsl) is a trout lake with fish of very high quality and good size. (Up to 3 kg.) The fish is a bit shy, so fishing is best in some wind, with grey sky/ rain, or during the night. There are good places to camp for the night. The nature is beautifull and you can explore a large natural chalk cave near by.

Upstream of Øvereidet there are many good lakes and streams for trout fishing. Please see the description for Kalbekkvika for details. Fishing in some of these lakes require boat in Storvatnet.

Fjord fishing

Fjord fishing (Deep sea fishing): The fishing in the fjord after salt water species is also good in the area. Common species are cod, coal fish, red fish, and hallibut.

Boats

Four boats are included in the rent, Two in the fjord, and two in the lake. The biggest boat (in the fjord) is 15 feet, and has a 20 Hp. outboard engine. Three additional 5 Hp engines are included.

History of Sagmestereidet

Eidet is the name of the abandoned farm that you can see the remains of by the cabin at Sagmestereidet. The name relates to aThe name Sagmestereidet that a sawmill has been situated here, run by a power plant in the river. The sawmill is believed to have existed as far back as around 1740, because some farmers who had been grinding their grain at Eidet that year, built a fire that burnt down the whole of Hovøya, including a bear in a cave. There was a sawmill in the area earlier too, around 1650, but they are not sure where it was situated.

The last farmer at Eidet was Axel Eide, he was a carpenter, fisherman, boat-builder as well as a farmer. In 1973, at the age of 78 years, he was the captain on a «seksring», a typical boat for Bindal, built in Bindal (it is about 20” and has 3 pairs of oars). The boat sailed from Harangsfjord to Oslo to promote and save the skill of building this type of a boat, a tradition that goes back thousands of years in Bindal. Together with him on the boat was Alf Imøy from Bindal and Ragnar Thorseth, who later bacame famous sailing viking-boats and going to the North pole. This expedition to Oslo led to a growth in building Bindal-boats, teaching new generations to build this beautiful boat, and the old boat-builders could again make use of their skills. Axel lived in Eidet till 1967-1968, the last half year alone. Since he moved, the farm has been abandoned.

The Eide river has been known as a good sea trout- and salmon river way back, and the tenants at Eidet had the exclusive right to fish there, keeping the others away. How much fish that has been caught here by the tenants of Eidet, is not known, but a lot has been sold to buyers on the other side of Bindalsfjorden. Axel Eide told that a silversmith lived for some time at Eidet, finding the silver for his production in caves somewhere in Urstjønnsdalen. There were silver spoons that he made at Eidet, but nobody has found the silver caves so far. Vassbygda lay earlier under the sea level and tidal currents have made big caves in the area.
